Hanoi, coffee, scooters, and decisions made on a curb
Verdict Hanoi does not run you over. It negotiates your personal space with horns.
A short first-morning guide to Hanoi: strong coffee, streets with character, and how to cross without becoming theatrical.
Hanoi works better once you accept that the city had plenty going on before you arrived with your map and your very brave intentions.
Start with coffee
Find a small cafe, order egg coffee if you want the classic, and sit down to watch the street. This is a legitimate activity. In Hanoi, observing traffic is basically a local sport.
A short route
- Walk the Old Quarter before the heat gets dramatic.
- Take a long coffee break, because coffee here is not trying to be polite.
- Wander near Hoan Kiem Lake.
- Eat somewhere with more locals than Instagram decor.
Practical note
To cross the street, walk at a steady pace and avoid theatrical movements. The city looks chaotic, but it has rules. Naturally, nobody gives you the handbook.
